My personal experience with cancer is threefold, at the age of 22 I lost my mother to Inflammatory Breast Cancer, she passed away at the age of 51. I was diagnosed with breast cancer in October 2012 and I am a breast cancer survivor. In May 2014, my nephew Matthew, 5 years of age was diagnosed with Acute Lymphoblastic Leukaemia (ALL). He is currently on maintenance chemotherapy.

I completed my 4-year nursing diploma in December 1989 and then went on to specialise in Operating Theatre, more specifically as a scrub nurse in Cardiac Theatre.

In March 2000 I moved to Ireland to work in Cardiac Theatre at the Mater Private Hospital in Dublin. After a few years and looking for a new challenge I moved from nursing and into the Quality Department. During my time in the MPH I was involved in the implementation of a number of electronic systems throughout the hospital and theatre. Finding a new area of interest I decided to broaden my experience and went on to complete my MSc in Health Informatics at Trinity College Dublin in 2010.

When a work opportunity presented itself early 2011 I decided to return
to JHB, South Africa. The new position at VisualLive would allow me to broaden my new career, knowledge, and experience, working for a company pioneering in the digital delivery of health education in the medical sector.

As a result of my life journey; my nursing, working at VisualLive and my personal experience with cancer resulted in CancerPort.

I believe we all need different information at different times of our journey with cancer. Initially, it is about your diagnosis and treatment, but after the initial treatment period, you move into a new phase, living with and managing your cancer. This for me is when the real journey with cancer begins.

CancerPort is a patient education network, containing the best of local and international content, sourced by our team of medical specialists. My aim is to improve the delivery of information to breast cancer patients, survivors, family, and friends. The channel contains links to current information, news, tools, resources, support groups, social media link-ups, apps, and blogs, thereby assisting you in living the best life possible, as a breast cancer survivor.

Best wishes Fiona
